Zahra is an Assistant Professor, at the Department of Electrical and Software Engineering, University of Calgary, since September 2021. Prior to that, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Waterloo Microfluidics Lab, University of Waterloo. She received her Ph.D. degree in Nanosystems and Microsystems from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada, in 2020. and her B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in telecommunication and electronics engineering from Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST), Iran, in 2014 and 2016.
During her Ph.D., she focused on designing microwave planar sensing structures for distant, non-invasive, and real-time sensing. The designs Zahra developed during her Ph.D. have enabled a wide range of applications, from oil and gas harsh environment sensing to a non-invasive glucose monitoring device.
Dr. Abbasi is vice chair (MTT-S) in the IEEE Southern Alberta Antennas and Propagation Society (AP), Microwave Theory & Techniques Society (MTT), Communications Society (COM) chapter. She enjoys being involved in the community services.
Out of work, Zahra reads on productivity and mental health topics and how these important aspects of life can be overlooked in academia. Zahra is a professional home cook and enjoys watercolor painting.
